Acronyms & abbreviations and meanings…?

Does it bother you when someone is talking, they use an acronym or abbreviation and then immediatey follow it up with it’s meaning without being asked what the meaning is?

-If you mean like “lol, laughing out loud” yes!

These stupid acronyms that people are using and that I keep seeing on these cell phone commercials are bugging the crap out of me.

You should watch “Californication” starring David Duchovny on Showtime. He had this really great quote about how these acronyms are slowly killing the English language.

No it does not bother me. Those people are just showoffs and they will hopefully stop, as I did. “SNAFU” I thought was so cute I had to explain it, until I learned that most everybody knew what it meant. I remain fascinated with acronyms. They enable me to fish things out of my neural internet, sometimes called “wetware.” Example? I knew there was a cute acronym in Spanish that I encountered yesterday .. in doing a Yahoo Search on “Evo Morales,” the first Indian President of Bolivia. “MAS” “more” is his politicial party “Movimiento al Socialismo.” Spanish is easy, acronyms are fun. Need I say more?

The acronyms and abbreviations bother me. The explanations don’t.

If it’s common, like BYOB or LOL, then it’s annoying because it’s insulting. Obviously I know what that means.

If it’s something more obscure, like PCOS, then it is reasonable for the person to give the definition. Otherwise the other person may feel too stupid to ask. Whenever I use and acronym or abbreviation, I ask “Are you familiar with that?” or assume “You’re familiar with that? . . .”
