I am writing something for school that is about a historical fiction novel. What tense should I use? Present because its a story or past because its talking about historical events?

And

If you I am writing about a the story and the character recalls an even from the past, should I write that in past or present tense?

When it comes to tenses, relax! Get it? Tense? Relax?

Anyway, it could function correctly in both present or past tense, as long as you are consistent throughout. Stories are typically in present tense, and I think the story would be most exciting in this tense.

If there is part of the story that is in past tense from the point of reference from the rest of the story, like a flashback or recalling an event, it should be in past tense. Assuming you set it up correctly.

Really, though, which ever way you choose to go reflects your own style, and as long as you keep the tense consistent, you should be fine.

Write this thing how ever you feel comfortable in presenting it. You can mix tenses up a bit, as long as the foundation tense remains the same, and that’s your choice, too. Good luck!
