Would you rather go to college at a small school or a large school?

I teach some classes at a fairly large university in Oregon. I don’t mind teaching, but I know that I would have hated to be a student in a large (approx. 200 students) class like the one I teach. I received my undergrad from a small school. It was great that all of the professors knowing your first name and taking a genuine interest in your education. I had personally been invited to professors’ houses for dinner quite often.

BUT there are disadvantages to going to a small school. There are fewer options for classes and majors/minors. The school I went to was in a very small town, which didn’t have much to do on campus or off campus.

So, what do you think…and if you’re going to college for the first time this fall why did you choose the size of school you chose.

I’m going off to school for the first time this fall. I chose to go to a medium-size university (population 4000). I like the fact that I get smaller classes, as I don’t think I would have been able to stay awake in a huge lecture hall. I liked the size of my high school classes very well. I’m not sure if I could have adapted to big classes that are 200+ students large because I already have a hearing problem. Even though it is well corrected with hearing aids, I don’t think my corrected hearing is as good as the average person’s is. Also, I’ll be able to get help from a professor without too much difficulty if I ever need it, since my university is small enough. Due to my hearing problem, I am feeling a little overwhelmed that some of my classes are going to be 50-60 students (after all, I did choose a medium-size university, not a small one), but I am pretty sure that the class sizes will get smaller as I get into upper level classes. I’m not too upset that I don’t have a ton of major options. My school still has an accounting program, as well as majors in business administration, economics, and math. Since I want one of those majors, I am perfectly happy with my options. I am at school to learn a lot, not spend the whole time socializing, so I should be fine with the fact that there are not a million activities to do. There are enough to keep me busy when I am not studying at my mid-size university.

If it had been up to me, I would have chosen to go to a smaller university (of course I didn’t receive enough financial aid at any of the private schools). Since I ultimately received a $7500/year scholarship at my public, in-state, medium-sized university, I was able to afford it better than I would have if I had been going elsewhere. But I think everything will turn out alright, regardless of the size.

Very large school. Options are unlimited when it comes to changing social circles, a lot of options for classes and majors as you named in your question plus the bigger the competition the bigger the challenge for that everybody strives for their best to shine.

downside,at times when you feel lonely the crowd that you don’t know makes you feel even more lonely.. and then somebody you have never seen before sits next to you and asks if everything is alright and the day gets better 🙂

Most of the schools in today’s society are overpopulated, often bringing in students from over 15 miles away. But there are still a few fighting districts left in this country that make a major attempt to keep their schools small, most of which stay with the age old program of Kindergarten through twelfth grade in the same building. They seem much more like a private school or even a large home schooled family to the outside world, but what do they offer that larger public schools don’t?

# 1 ~ Community!

Since the beginning of time, people have grown in “communities”. They lived near each other, shopped together, frequented the same places, etec. The need for “togetherness” is simply human nature and attending a small school nurture’s that need by offering small classes, local teachers and staff, community wide programs and friendly faces that know you by name.

# 2 ~ Forever Friendships

When you attend a small school, you are often with the same people throughout your education. For example, if you start Kindergarten with 20 people, chances are, you will be graduating with the same 20 people. You will have spent 30 hours a week with these people for 13 years. When you spend that much time with people, especially in small groups, they become your friends, your family. Sometimes you hate them, but most of the time you love them. These are people that you will grow with and remain friends with, probably throughout your life.

# 3 ~ More One On One Attention Per Student!!!

This is a major advantage of a small school. The Student Teacher Ratio. Small schools generally have a better student teacher ratio, which means your child is getting more individualized attention! That is the most important step in a healthy learning environment. Large Public School teachers are taught to teach the average child! So, if your child is slightly above average or slightly below average he/she will either be struggling to keep up or bored out of their minds! In a small school, the teachers are more likely to have the time to spend with a slightly ahead or behind child, because they have less students to teach and to keep under control at one time.

I was lucky enough to attend a school like this and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for the best public school option for their child.

I know and still know every single teacher I ever had, I know who I graduated with, each and every one of them, I know their birthdays and their parents names, where they grew up and I still say hello and smile at them when I run in to them. Do you?

I prefer to go to a small college. However, once you exit core classes, I would expect the class size to significantly drop.

well, i would love to go to a bigger university simply because smaller universities are sometimes not renowned. a bigger school also has more resources and whatnot.
