Would a Microbiology course be any different taken at a community college vs. a state university?

Has any one take general microbiology at a university/community college and been able to compair it to the other? I’m hoping the one offered at the community college might be easier?!

I have taught at both the 4-year university and community college level. In general, classes at the community college tend to be easier for a variety of reasons. First, classes tend to be smaller so you can get more interaction with the instructor a nd have more in class participation. Also, sometimes classes at community colleges are a little remedial or dumbed down for a lack of a better term. I’m not trying to degrade community college, but I have seen this first hand. This could be due to the quality of instructor. Many instructors at the community college only have a Master’s degree while at the university most professors will have their Ph.D. This doesn’t necessarily mean better class as I have seen some professors who are terrible teachers. Another reason is that the community colleges purposely make the classes easier to accommodate students. This is unfortunate but I have seen it first hand. Many community colleges have a hard time competing with larger universities so they don’t want to lose the students they currently have.

These are all generallities and each college is different. If possible, try talking to someone who has taken the class o find out how it is.

The same curricula. The difference is that the university has better laboratory equipment. But studying in one or the other is not the essential question. The thing is, if microbiolody is your interest, you will learn about it with or without a university or community college. Your success depends not on any outside university or college, but within you. These schools are just instruments to make your earning easier, and recognized.

If you are looking to pursue anything more than a 2 year degree, make sure that the credit from the community college is transferable. If it’s not, then definitely take it at the state university.

If it is transferable I suggest taking the course at the CC. Classes are typically smaller so you have a better chance to learn. Some say CC’s are easier, but it really depends on the professors.

It might be easier because the classes are smaller compared to a university lecture hall… and tutoring and assistance is more readily available.
