Why do some health care professionals hide their knowledge?

I am a Nuclear Medicine Technology major. Up on our clinical rotation with my classmates, we were assigned to work with experienced technologists at different hospitals. Unfortunately, we are passing through an experience that sufferes our interest to learn. The main reason is some of the technologists do not want to share what they know. All of us are wondering why. I also do not know why they are feeling insecured! Personally, I belive Hospitals are one of the educational institutions and their health care professionals also have certain responsibility to train college students. Do you think it is fair to waste 32hrs per week in hospitals for nothing?

What is the best strategy to convince this adages to share what they know?

I am in nursing school and we have clinical rotations as well. of course, some clinical instructors are better than others. What I have found works best in less than desired situations is to try building a relationship with the person.

Try asking things about them personally (but don’t pry or get too personal) and take the time to listen to them. Look around their work space or at what they wear etc.

If you see pictures of kids there is your opening or ice breaker. Chances are they will love to talk about their children or grandchildren.

If you see a school pin or class ring, notice it and ask them about the school they attended. This gives you a good lead off into – what was it like when you were in school. Now you just built some comradery based on common ground.

Just remember they are people so treat them as such.

Complain to your supervisor that your not being provided the learning experience necessary to develop into a successful tech. Give examples, and quote the ppl you gotta learn from, then tell your high up, say ‘ you know theres more to this than what i was told, how can I do what I was shown if I am only provided a glimpse of the whole picture’

Speak up and ask questions. Act interested in what they’re doing. If you’re not showing interest or asking questions, they make be thinking 1) You’re not interested or 2) You already know the information and need nothing explained to you. Let them know you want to hear what they have to say!
