Why do people say its so tough to get into medical school?

I understand that it is VERY competetive but if you can apply again and again and if you had good grades in high shool arent you bound to get in SOMEWHERE eventualy?

If someone really wants to be a doctor what is stoping them they just have to apply again and maybe do some research in between?

This stems from my previous question which has lead to wondering why people dont just apply again?

You can apply again and again, but it’s still difficult. If you failed the first time, and the competition is only getting more difficult since more and more students are applying for med school, what makes you think you will get in the next time? In addition, your grades in high school are completely irrelevant when applying to med school. Only your college grades and your scores on your MCAT really matter.

Of course, if someone really wants to be a doctor and they work hard at it, i’m sure they will eventually get into med school, if they don’t care what kind of med school they get into i.e. university of las vegas med school

What the above poster says is true.

Medical schools don’t look at high school grades.

And if your grades are good but not good enough, they are not going to “eventually” get you into medical school–it only gets harder year after year. If a person isn’t qualified for medical school, they’re not going to get in.

It’s also a very grueling process to apply to medical school. It’s not a matter of “just applying.” It’s very expensive and time-consuming. It can cost in the thousands of dollars, if the applicant is applying to several schools. There are numerous “rounds” to applying, including visiting the schools, interviewing, and filling out lengthy applications.

Yes, some people do apply more than once (though usually not over and over again), and do get in. But they’ve probably changed their game plan–applying to different schools, retaking their MCATs (which in itself is expensive and time-consuming), and perhaps taken extra undergraduate courses to prepare themselves. That’s not an option for everyone, and many people would prefer to move on with their lives and enter another field.

You’re jumping from high school grades to medical school. If you got good grades in high school, that gets you into college, not medical school. Once you get to college you need to prove yourself all over again against a much tougher level of competition. You can apply as often as you like, but if your stats don’t change, then your chances probably don’t either.
