This may be a generalization based on your personal experience…but the Brown Univ. alumni I know don’t fit the description you claim.
Although I know of only a few people who graduated from Brown Univ, which I admit is statistically a limited sample, they definitely fit the definition of being people, but I can assure you they are NOT pretentious.
So perhaps I am being misled, or maybe your sample is also rather limited.
In all fairness, perhaps you should rephrase your question to read “Why are the people I meet from Brown University pretentious?”

Asking why Brown people are pretentious is like asking why Hollywood people are pretentious. They’re afraid of losing possible connections, upsetting others, and trying to appear perfect when in fact they’re some of the most fallible people on Earth. They’re so blind with wealth that they can’t be themselves.
