Second — you can get into medical school with any major — as long as you do well in the courses that are required. That being said — you have a better shot gettng in if you take more than the minimum required. Majoring in Biology or Chemistry will do that for you. But there ar eother health related disciplines (bio-engineering, for example) that will also give you what you need.

Most people major in biology because the premed requirements coincides with the biology major reqs. In fact, you can major in anything you want just as long as you fulfill the med school requirements.

After your 1st year at the university, you should think about taking the MCATs. However, you should have already taken 1 year of chemistry

1 year of biology

1 year of organic chemistry

1 year of english

1 year of physics

If not, I would hold off on the MCATs until I’ve taken those requirements!

As far as choices go, be sure you don’t waste time with a BA, get a full BS — in whatever you decide to major. Based upon my cousin’s experience (a new MD), I’d say go for biology or biochemistry. There certainly are schools that offer “Pre-Med” curricula–if that’s an option for you, then that is probably th best way to go. Again, communicate with the med schools, competition is tight to get in, so you may not get into the school that’s your first choice–so talk to a number of them.
