Cal States follow the UC. Each campus might have a specific program or two that might be ranked higher than some of the lower UCs, but in general, all the UCs are better than the Cal States in terms of academic rep. Cal States have a better rep for preparing you in terms of practical skills for a job right after undergrad in many programs though, even if they might not be as respected academically.
