I don’t think any colleges offer program for the aspiring herpetologist.
You would have to go in the biological and animal sciences. Study vertebrates, animals (what do you call non-mammals?)
It is my guess that herpetology includes a background of chemistry. A large part of understanding snakes is understanding their impact on the human race, i.e., their venom and its antidotes(sp?). One of the only reasons herpetologists exist is to allay the effects of snakes on humans. You never know who you might save.
