Where is the best neuroscience grad school program out there? and other similar questions.?

I’ve got a couple of questions about getting my grad degree in neuroscience. So, rather than flood the boards with questions, I’ll just ask them all here and hope for your insightful answers. πŸ™‚

1. Which are the really good schools and programs for graduate training in neuroscience? (I’m not at all picky about locations)

2. Is there a difference between a degree in Neuroscience and other similar ones, like Brain and Cognitive Sciences?

3. I’ve got no research experience in neuroscience (not really an option here in the Philippines). Will that be a big problem? Could research experience in cognitive psychology be a possible substitute? Also, is a GPA of 3.6 (BS Psyc) good enough?

4. What does one do with a neuroscience grad degree, apart from research and teaching?

5. How big of a problem might I have with funding? I’ve got very little money of my own.

I plan on starting 5 years from now, if it makes any difference. I’d love to hear any other tips you might have for me too. πŸ˜€

1) There are many schools in the US that are excellent. However for neuroscience the best is Harvard university. They have a brain bank and are the most well know program.

3) Not having research will count somewhat against you because a lot of US students hav research opportunities. But no all of them. Since you mention that you do have some research they will take that.

4) You can work on hospital and pharmaceutical companies.

5) Funding? There are only six US universities here that are need blind for international students.

There are:

Harvrad

MIT

Princenton

Yale

Williams College

Middlebury College.

Out of the six only 2 or 3 might have your degree.

Also, many universities in the US give you some funding if you are international student (like half of tuition)

Just remember that they are over half of million international students here, so you can due as well

1) The best are Harvard, Stanford, and John Hopkins

2) You will have to look at each school’s department to see what differences they have. The core classes should be

similar.

3) Not a big problem. 3.6 is ok. They will look at your GRE subject specific score as well. Need good references from professors for the BS.

4) There are industry companies that design and develop applications and products that involve neuroscience. You need to look them up. If you go to grad school, you will have an opportunity to find them with help from your adviser.

5) If you get accepted into a graduate school in the US, they will offer you a research stipend or a teaching stipend depending on your adviser and how much money they have. Usually it will be a compbination of both.

Good Luck
