Whats wrong with wikipedia for research?

I support wikipedia and Iam in the full awareness alot of colleges feel threatened by it. NOt everything in it is factaul but neither is “Qualified sources”. I have seen books that come from schools that are flat out infactual. weres the harm in using wikipedia as a focusing point to see if the article is factual or infactual source as a research paper. What I mean is Use wikipedia as model ifno and search the info wiki is giving me on a subject to confirm is validness

You could use Wiki as an index and go to the sources that are cited in the footnotes. However, you cannot use the text because you do not know who wrote or who edited it. Corporations, political parties, governments and others with their own agenda are editing text to support their own views.

Because I can go in right now and edit an entry for wikipedia and it could be completely false and there might not be anyone to correct my mistake. At least in a peer reviewed journal, or some educational website, it has at least been reviewed by someone.

I use wikepedia as a start and go from there. My college will not accept it as a source. If its medical type research you have so many other sources its worth it to find one that you know has been peer reviewed and is accurate.
