What would you do if you were the instructor and you received a paper from a student and you know they copied?

What would you do if you were the instructor and you received a paper from a student and you know they copied (plagiarized) it. What would be your thoughts and response to the student.

I would follow any procedures in place for this kind of occurence, but I would speak to the student first, to ask why they copied and to inform them of the procedure that will follow. They may have a reason that you could offer some support with, (for future papers) but you should never let them get away with it.

Also find out where they copied it from, so you can show it to the appropriate people.

Maybe you could mark the paper and show it to them, saying something like ‘this would have been your grade if this was your paper, but as it isn’t you get a zero’. Should illustrate the point.

first of all if i knew where they got their sources from or where they copied it from i would confront the student and just give him a zero on his paper i think by now students should know that plagiarism is wrong…in addition i think that the instructor should emphasize the school’s policy on plagiarism not to embarrass the student who did do it, but just so that the rest of the students is aware of it…my teachers always said they could always tell if something was plagiarized bc the tone and style doesn’t match the students previous work

I would wait until I collected all the students papers, and once corrected, I would make a photo copy of the student who received the lowest grade and give it to the cheater. When the student told you how that wasn’t his paper I would respond to him by saying, “well neither was the other one, but dont worry, your grade is still the same.” Something to that effect. It’s always fun to make a bold point.

My University’s stance is pretty severe- instant failure of the course, if not dismissal from the school.

Assuming yours isn’t as severe, I’d grade it out as if it were a normal paper, and put on two scores. One score for the real author (Wikipedia, for example) and one zero for the student. Follow that with a “See me. NOW.” and cover all bases.

“Wikipedia gets an A. You fail.”

I would fail both students, because not only did the one copy it, the other one, let them do this, and didn’t stop it. I would also sit with both students, and their parents and go over what coping does for their grades and if they keep it up, they will fail the whole class.

If you can prove they copied it, they get a 0 on the paper and a 0 in the class. I had one suspended from school after he cheated on two papers in my class.

did you mention that they should not copy? i would talk to the student and point out that you know where if came from word for word. let the student know that is not acceptable. give them a chance to redo the paper. if it continues talk to the principle and the parents. if all else fails. fail them.

Plagiarism is a big NO NO. I would fail them from the course and report it to the proper administrators.

Sounds like Professor C has it down, but to let them know they copied grab up the information that they copied from as proof otherwise you may have a fight…..

i would give the student the highest grade and then tell him/her not to do it again! the contrast of the move will shake him/her than any punishment. test it..and you will see. the way…instructors have been following orders, rules and regulations is “old” stuff. now we live in a new world. and you have to try new means. voila. hope it helps.
