What to do next after mcat scores.?
My girlfriend took the mcat and only got a 17, it is her first time and she graduates from college this year. She was told by whoever that if she gets at least a 26 she would be a shoe in for medical school because of everything else that she brought to the table. Good grades, experience, and whatever else. Well that did’nt happen, so what is next. I don’t want to ask her about it because she is pretty ticked off right now. She said she won’t retake it again till next year and that she is going to enroll in a class that gets your prepared and helps you study. Is that score that bad?

That score is bad. Medical schools are tough to get into, with admittance rates of 42%. I also believe she took the test a little late. Most people send applications to medical school during the summer of their junior year in college, which means that they take the MCAT earlier in the year. Enrolling in class is a good idea, but it will only help if she really studies a lot.

She really needs to retake the exam. From my experience, a 30 is what she should shoot for to get into a decent school. A 17 is a pretty bad score, seeing as each section is worth 15, times 3 sections gives you a 45 (I think- its been awhile since I have looked at anything MCAT related). If she has a low MCAT score but really high grades, the application committee may think she has an inflated GPA and that will definitely hurt her chances. If she scores that low again, she will most likely have to consider a different career choice. Med school isn’t for everyone and only a few percent of the students who start college in the PreMed track actually make it there.
