What sort of a visa should a summer intern to the US obtain??

I am from India and will be going to the US in the summer of 2008 for a summer project for which I will NOT be paid. What sort of a visa should I apply for?? I have a few relatives in the US who will be willing to sponsor my trip. Do I obtain a tourist visa and claim to the officials that I am visiting my relatives or do I have to go for a J-1 visa?? If I do end up going for a J-1 visa, how will it affect the chances of getting an F-1 visa when I am planning for higher studies, the subsequent year??

Hello,

If you are going to the US primarily for tourism, but want to take a short course of study of less than 18 hours per week, you may be able to do so on a visitor visa. You should inquire at the appropriate US Embassy or Consulate. If your course of study is more than 18 hours a week, you will need a student visa.

Pay attention to the fact that June, July, and August are the busiest months in most consular sections, and interview appointments are the most difficult to get during that period.

Students should note that Embassies and Consulates are able to issue your student visa 120 days or less, in advance of the course of study registration date.

A beginning student who wants an earlier entry into the U.S. (more than 30 days prior to the course start date), must qualify for, and obtain a visitor visa.
