What should I say?

I would like to consider a Female single sex college such as Smith, but I don’t know how to tell my dad. Every time I bring up the subject he asks “Why would you want to go there?” Then he tries to be all jokey and say, “Are you trying to tell us you’re lesbian?” I am not, I want to go because of the leadership oppurtunities and the academics but he won’t listen. If anybody could help that would be great.

There are many Female single sex colleges that are academically strong as well. Perhaps focusing on this would be helpful. You could then explain some of the specific advantages of attending a women’s college.

Smith ( http://www.smith.edu ) is an excellent school and is well known nationally both in graduate school and employment realms.

Another way to explain to your Dad about going to a women’s college could be explaining that many women’s colleges are in consortiums with other schools. This gives you the benefits of a women’s college with exposure to co-ed classes. Some examples include:

The College of Saint Catherine ( http://www.stkate.edu ) a Women’s College in Saint Paul, MN which is connected to The University of Saint Thomas ( http://www.stthomas.edu/ ) which is a co-ed school that was previously all male.

The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University

( http://www.csbsju.edu ) in Collegeville, MN. Saint Benedict is a women’s college and Saint John’s is a men’s college. While students can take courses across campuses each school has a unique identity and separate residence life, dorms etc.

If you are looking for further ways to approach the question of attending a women’s college you could check out http://www.womenscolleges.org/ which includes a section on college searching ( http://www.womenscolleges.org/perspective/college_search.htm ) as well as a comparison of women’s colleges and co-ed colleges ( http://www.womenscolleges.org/perspective/nsse_study.htm )
