What should I do?

I started college last year in a rural area. When I finished my first year I realized that the enviorment wasn’t for me and that I really disliked it!! My major was marketing, but I wanted to do Advertising and they didn’t have that major. Many people are telling me Marketing is a better major, but I really want to do Advertising and go to school somewhere else!! I just want to make a smart decision that will put me on the best career path and still make me HAPPY!! What should I do???

I do have to tell you that while there are some schools offering an “Advertising” major, most people going into advertising study marketing. However, I can understand that with that career goal, a rural school may not have been your best choice. You probably should be somewhere you can have more of a connection to the industry. You will want to do internships and have direct exposure to the field. While the industry isn’t as focused in New York City as it used to be, you do need to be in a major city if you want to have exposure to more than one or two agencies. I do think that you might be happier elsewhere. You need to look into opportunities in places where you are comfortable living.

I have a somewhat familiar situation. You have to weigh the pros and cons. Do you hate environment but love school? If you don’t like environment AND they don’t have your major.. GET OUT! ๐Ÿ™‚ I chose a college in which I did NOT like the environment, but it was a great school to become a teacher, so this is where I chose to go. I am going to make the best of it. How important is the environment to you?

There are many places online that can help you choose a college that is right for you. Number ONE.. find one that has your advertising major. Then factor in environment, price, location, etc.

Good luck! ๐Ÿ™‚

If you are not happy, your grades may reflect!! Do you! And do more research. The longer you wait to transfer, the less likely your courses will transfer. Contact other schools ASAP or research online. Your future is yours and if you miss out because of listening to someone else you will be pissed at your self!!

Contact your career center on campus, they should have readings on the marketing/advertising market. You should compare salaries and the rate of students getting internships and jobs at your current school. Also talk to your AA. They can help if you decide to transfer!!

Good Luck Ma and dont stress!!!

Marketing and advertising is used interchangably. Marketing is the norm in post-secondary education, and you can use that major in your career in advertising. You are more “marketable” (no pun intended) careerwise if you study hard and do some internships in your major.

As for transferring, you must consider all options. I went to a university I hated then planned ahead so I could transfer as a sophomore to a university that suited me best.

Good luck! ๐Ÿ™‚
