What issues and setbacks do minorities still face in colleges today?

Some people will tell you that such thing as racism do not exist in modern colleges while others will tell you that it still exists. I would like to know exactly what those issues and setbacks that minorities face today. Thanks.

Well, the issues I have personally faced is getting treated like I was stupid or didnt belong. There is alot of stereotyping in colleges and I experienced the worst treatment in the Science areas. That could also be because I am a woman too. The crap that people see on TV about Blacks (rap videos, news) is what most expected me to act like. People assumed I was violent and ignorant right off the bat before I said anything.

Racism and prejudice still exists and it always will in colleges. I just hold my head high and prove eveybody wrong. Others are so shocked to see a Black woman making some strides for herself. I have never let my race stop me and I realized others will use race to put down someone when they are intimidated or threatened. Thats how I look at it and other minorities should too.

The biggest problems minorities face is getting past the race card. If you act like a minority and feel sorry for yourself, people will treat you poorly. Also, if you have bad grammar or a heavy accent that’s hard to understand, people will treat you differently.

When I was in college, some black kids were just regular people. They were cool. Other black kids tried to “represent” and just looked like fools.

No matter how much the effects of prejudice is mitigated, it may never completely go away. This forces minorities to try harder in school or work to succeed. For an extra edge in succeeding at school visit http://mr.schoolsuccess.tripod.com .

First off, in most colleges the minority would be the “whites” because of the fact that an overwhelming amount of Asians, Hispanics, Blacks, Pacific Islanders, etc. are applying to colleges.

The way I see it is in today’s society, to be considered racist is almost Taboo. It also depends on which area geographically, you want to go to college.
