Ok I barely read him when I was in Pedagogy but I think the highlights of his work/research revolves around:

1. Cognitive development

2. Moral reasoning and moral judgements

To summarize what I think the examiner wants to know on how his work relates to the individual and society today:

1. cognitive devt

According to Piaget basically one’s logic and reasoning can be nurtured and not just leaving the developments of one mental process to nature. This benefits the individual because by understanding the various developmental stages of cognitive thoughts, one can actually understand wherein lies one strengths and weaknesses and work on them.

It is relevant to us today because it helps us understand various learning difficulties and expound on our pedagogical repertoire.

2. Moral reasoning and moral judgements

Piaget believe that there is no inate sense of good and bad but instead one’s values is based on the environment. All actions are deemed good or bad by seeing how the repecussion affects the society. For e.g. if a child grows up in a family of thieves, he may not see stealing as wrong.

This is important to us because instead of merely punishing people for their crimes, a lot of thought and work has been put into REFORMing these criminals because by letting them understand and help show them the ‘right’ way – it’ll imporve the society as a whole in the long run.
