I am starting a Pharm. D. program in about 2 weeks where I have to shadow a pharmacist… and even though I haven’t done it yet, I have worked in a pharmacy for 5 years. Based off of that I believe shadowing a pharmacist involves incorporating yourself into their work atmosphere by following them throughout their differing duties and asking questions about the medications, the differences between retail, long-term care and hospital pharmacies ect. Hope this helps ..

Just call a pharmacy and ask if a pharmacist there would let you shadow them. Shadowing can be an informal thing. It’s a good idea so that you get an idea of what a pharmacist does and whether you’d like to do that as a career.

You really can’t shadow a retail pharmacist unless the pharmacist owns his or her own pharmacy. As for clinical pharmacy, you possibly can if your high school or college has a program with the hospital.

The best way to get experience is by working as a pharmacy technician or clerk.
