What is the difference between a master of science (MS) in accounting and a master of accounting (MAcc)?
Favorite Answer
The MS in Accounting will include more academic research type courses (stats, methods, etc…) than will the MAcc while the MAcc will include more “doin accounting” type courses.
Reality,
It depends on the school, what is an MS at one school may be identical to the MAcc at another.
The MAcc is a terminal degree though and that can make some difference. In some programs, the MAcc runs toward 45 hours whereas the MS stays around 30-36.
Theoretically, the MAcc would prepare the student for advanced practice whereas the MS (or MA) would prepare the student for further study toward the PhD.
It all depends on the school though – check the differing curricula.
