What Goes on in a College Interview?
Favorite Answer
First — dress up, don’t chew gum & be polite.
Second — be prepared to answer questions like “Why do you want to come to Hamilton?” and questions about what you want to study. They may ask you what you want to do when you get out of school. You don’t have to have an answer to that — you can tell them that you hope to find out during the next four years, and think Hamilton will be a good place to do that.
As I recall, Hamilton is a good liberal arts college — so you may want to think about why you want to go there rather than a big university, etc.
Finally — don’t be afraid to ask questions about the school — but avoid questions that make it seem like it is all about you. For example — don’t ask questions like “Are there a lot of cute boys/girls on campus?” or “Are there places to do my Laundry?” — but questions like “What percent of students go on to graduate school?” or “What kind of study-abroad programs do you have?” are good.
Try to highlight what you have to offer — and not what you can get out of the school.
They aren’t trying to trick you — so try to feel comfortable. Good luck.
So…look at those questions and really make a list of answers–you want to be overprepared!
