What do you have to major in college as an undergraduate to take Medicine for graduate school?

Is it neccessary to take Pre-Med in college if you want to take Medicine in Graduate School? Or is there any other way around that? For example, Wisconsin(Madison) offers medicine but Bachelor’s Degree is the highest they offer? While marquette doesnt offer medicine at all…but they do have alot of biology type majors….which would be the best choice…taking Medicine(Bachelor’s Degree) at Wisconsin Madison…or going to Marquette taking Biochemistry or Biology(Bachelor’s Degree)? so i can take up Medicine in Graduate school…. considering my main goal really is to become a doctor in Medicine….thanks for the help

You don’t even really need to declare any degree. Just look at the med schools you want to go to. They will have a list of required courses. I know several people who got into med school without a degree. Biology is the most common though.

Before you start taking classes you don’t need and wasting money check with the grad schools.

Good Luck!!!

Most medical schools require a Bachelor’s Degree and a passing grade on the MCAT. Most people go with some type of biology major. I guess it depends on what specialty you would like to pursue. You could always ask a doctor in your area that practices the type of medicine you would like to do. That’s what I did.

Lots of docs I’ve known and worked with had undergrad degrees in the sciences – chemistry, biology, etc. One was a BSN and decided to become a doctor.

Do you know what speciality you are interested in? Some undergrad studies might be better for certain specialities. I’d talk to an academic counselor at each college and get some specific information.

You can technically major in anything you want to as long as you have the required courses for whatever med school you want to go to. Most people tend to major in a science as it fulfills those requirements. The most common being Chemistry and biology.

UofI would be my choice DONT major in medicine if you want to go to med school. If you do your research, you’ll find those students are the most least likely to get accepted to med school. on the top of the list are all your science majors (bio, chem etc.) engineering students music majors and towards the bottom you’ll see premed med schools like to diversify their student profiles, it’s easier to get accepted by choosing a diff major than pre med
