Assuming you are in the U.S., you need to finish college (preferably with a major which proves that you are able to read large quantities of material and write well) and take the LSAT before applying for law school. Law school generally takes 3 years beyond the bachelor’s degree. If you want to practice law in the state in which you are in law school, they let you know what you need to do while in school (I, for example, had to take an ethics exam, be fingerprinted, and apply to the Bar while in school), but if you won’t be practicing in that state, you need to find out what the requirements of the state you plan to practice in are. After law school, you will probably spend a few months studying, and will then take the Bar exam. You will probably start working before you get the results of the exam, and if you pass, you then will continue working there. If not, you will need to retake the Bar exam.

I suggest that you go and find your school’s pre-law advisor. If your school doesn’t have one, either talk to academic advising or talk to a professor with a law degree. You can major in anything you want but you want to pick classes so that you have enough writing and critical thinking classes.

Also ask what law schools your advisor recommends just to get an idea of what kind of caliber schools you have realistic chance of gaining admission. But keep in mind that those are just recommendations. I would not rule out anything and hopefully your advisor will tell you the same thing.

At this point, the most important thing for you to consider is what type of law you want to practice. DO NOT major in Political Science, just because you think that is what lawyers have their BA in. Remember that you can major in anything, even Music, and go to law school. The new “pre-law” is actually Accounting.

If you want to practice business or corporate law, get your Bachelor in an area of Business. If you want to practice family law, major in Sociology. If you want to work in politics, major in Political Science.
