Congrats on choosing a career in the medical field.

Caution: The journey to become a medical doctor is a long and yet rewarding for many people.

The list below is a brief cliff notes version of what you need to do in order to get into med school.

1) Since you are interested in med school at a young age, I recommend that you take a look at those schools that have a 6 or 7 year program once you graduate from high school

2) If you do not want to go through the 6/7 year program, you can go to a regular college for 4 years

3) Take MCATs, Get good grades, Get some medical experience and Apply to med school

4) Interview and get in

5) 4 years of med school

6) since you want to be a plastic surgeon you will need at least 5 years of residency.

7) Since you are from TX, I recommend UT Austin, Rice, and all of the other texas schools. Texas has great medical schools!

Good Luck!

First, you have to graduate from college with all the pre-med requirements. It doesn’t matter what major you take but most pre-meds take either biology or chemistry. That’s four years, although a few brilliant students are admitted after three years of college. You must have outstanding grades to be accepted to medical school.

Then, medical school will take four years. After that, comes your residency, which is paid on-the-job training, which is usually in a hospital. M.D.s spend up to seven years in residency, including their speciality (such as plastic surgeon).

So, you have a long road ahead of you! It can take as many as 15 years after you graduate from high school.

I am really proud of you for exploring career options at the age of 13!
