my grades have gotten progressively gotten better throughout high school, and have had a steady job since freshman year

You might start out with a community college, get decent grades there and look at transferring to a four year school. Even with great recommendations both personal and work related, its hard to get into competitive schools with a 2.5. A four year state school might also be an option, depending on what state you live in. Residents of the state may find it easier to get in to their home state schools.
