What college is right for me?

I want to study anything to do with English, I don’t want a school that has a main focus on math. I’d like to be a journalist. And it has to have a fairly good price range and has to be in the US.

I would check out

Just sign up for it and you can define what you are looking for in a college and search colleges and see how it matches you, watch videos online about the college, and you can also look up schools by major!

That isn’t enough information to really narrow it down much, which leaves you with thousands of possibilities. Almost every school in the U.S. has an English department (and they all have a math department too, so while you may not need to take math, if you are afraid it may be contagious or something you are out of luck). You might want to look on www.collegeboard.com. It is the College Board’s website, and it has a “college matchmaker” function (look near the left-hand margin of the home page). You put in everything from your interests to your geographic preferences to your grades, and it will give you a list of schools which might be of interest; then you can look into it further.

Any decent liberal arts school should be fine. It really depends where you want to live and what sort of school “personality” fits you best.

Some things to help you narrow down your choices:

-Can you afford a private school, or is a good public university better for you? Can you afford out-of-state tuition, or would staying in your home state be better?

-Geography: do you want to stay in a similar area to your home, or are you eager to experience something totally new and different? Are you a big-city person or do you prefer a more rural or suburban setting?

-Size: do you crave the opportunities of a large university, or do you want the personal attention of a smaller university?

-Major: what kind of journalism are you interested in, or are you not sure yet? Newspaper, magazine, television? Do you want to report on the news, culture, sports? Politics might lead you to a D.C. news bureau, but entertainment or fashion reporting might pull you to L.A.

Give it some thought, and then focus your search a bit more.

My parents splurged for a book all about colleges, it’s gotten really great reviews and it’s been a wonderful help. Try checking out the website or searching around your local Border’s and cracking it open to check it out.
