What chances do I have at Yale University?

Hi, I am a freshman in high school.

Now that I am in high school I figure it’s time to start preparing for college. I have always just coasted along, easily getting A’s, but now I want to ensure that I still get those A’s.

I participate in lots of after school clubs, a few sports, and the newspaper.

I am president of the National Junior Honor Society.

I want to major in English, and become a journalist.

My grades are very good, generally all As with maybe an A- or two.

Basically, I am interested in acceptance at Yale. do I have good chances? I have always wanted to go to Yale.

Please let me know what I can do not only this year (freshman year) but also in the next three years of high school. Thank you very much!

You’re only a freshman. Without standardized test scores, a record of continuing achievement in challenging classes during your sophomore and junior years, and leadership/involvement in the high school extracurriculars that are important to you, it’s impossible to say what kind of chance you stand at Yale or any other school. And even if you did have those things, the applicant pool at Yale is so competitive that only those with truly outstanding achievements or family legacy can really be said to have a good chance: everyone else has to rely on luck to a certain extent. Use this time to enjoy your activities, challenge yourself academically for your own sake, and (when junior year gets closer) identify multiple schools at various levels of selectivity that you think will be good matches for you.
