What can one do with a BA/BS in liberal arts? What about liberal studies?

And furthermore, what is the difference between a BA and a BS. What is the difference between a liberal arts degree and a degree in liberal studies. I will have my AA in December and am planning on transfering to the state university and I’m considering the BA/BS in liberal arts. I want to hear from the general public and not a counselor that is employed by the school and paid to ‘sell’ the school. Thanks.

OK, lots of questions.

BA – Bachelor of Arts (English for example)

BS- Bachelors of Science (Communications, as an example)

Liberal arts is a general program term. It means you are studying a general program, instead of a more specific one (like those listed above). Liberal studies is just another (less common) term for this.

You can do a lot with a BA or BS, depending on what you study. There are so many programs that I really couldn’t list anything specific without knowing what major you are considering.

Liberal arts universities present general studies programs, English, Psychology, Biology, Communications, Sociology etc. They do not focus on one thing. It is good because you have a broad range of career options. Some places will request that you take more classes while you are working for them, to get more specific training.

By thy way, if you are going for a general studies degree, I wouldn’t waste my time (unless you are simply looking to learn). It’s not as valuable as a degree, because you create your own course load, which many companies just simply aren’t interested in.

General Studies is, of all the “useless for employment” degrees, one of the most useless. All it tells an employer is that you are indecisive and cannot make up your mind. That you are not passionate about anything. Colleges only offer a General Studies degree to kick out students who have accumulated enough credit to graduate but who have not declared a major to make room for someone with a little more passion for something, anything. In getting a job, there are a few jobs where they want you to have a degree but do not care in what. Like for selling insurance. But beyond that, it is of little more value than a high school diploma. Conceivably a General Studies degree could get you into graduate or law school but even at that, law and graduate schools want to see people with passion for something and General Studies does not send that message to them.
