There is really no written prerequisite. It is first of the Cisco certification but some prior knowledge of general workings of a computer would help. As far as networking knowledge is concerned, they start from the basics. Also if you can find an instructor-led class, you may have easier time learning. Some JCs offer CCNA classes at nominal prices compared to the private training facilities. You can expect to spend about 6-12 months in these classes before you get certified. But of courese, you can take the test without the classes if you are ready to pass.

Now if you are already employed, you probably have the desire to move up to a higher-paying position. The higher-level jobs are low in supply and high in demand. The same principle applies here. You are competing against others, and the deciding factor might be whether or not you have CCNA certification.
