Do you want to know how to read text books so you retain the material? The best way for me is to use a legal pad for taking notes as I read. This is particularly helpful in organizing notes for paper writing later. I put the bibliographic info at the top of the page, I quote or paraphrase directly from the text onto the left half of the page (I put the page number on the left at the beginning of the quote.) On the right half of the page I leave room for my own thoughts and comments about the material. You can do 2/3 and 1/3 – whatever works for you. This works so much better for me than individual note cards.

If you want to highlight in your text books – just remember that less is more. I prefer underlining in pencil and writing short comments in the margin.
