Your mother in law is probably paying you what she can afford to pay you. She probably won’t be upset if her daughter’s husband is making $20-30K+ more per year. It will be a sensitive issue. Don’t make the mother in law feel like she is cheap or that you don’t appreciate your job. In a normal situation you don’t tell your boss before interviewing with other companies, but I think an open honest communication is the best way here. Maybe she can hire somebody (it will probably her take her some time to find somebody) and you can train them until you find a new job.

If I were you I would see how I could work in doing both. Possibly start decreasing hours with the mother in law while getting something part time in your field that way if you decide to leave the family business completely you will have the experience needed to get another job.

PS I dont mean to be rude but it’s a little odd that you spelled “waisted” wrong since it should clearly be “wasted”…did I miss a joke or something??

I’m going to overlook your usage of “waisted” in place of “wasted” and tell you that you should do whatever you want. Family should come first, but know now that sometimes it’s a bit harder to deal with paycheck problems when they’re in the family…

no doubt, what did you go to school for, to make chunk change or big money? I stayed at a job working for my father in law after i got my BBA, and i regret having stayed there so long. I love my job now, make better money, and my in laws are happy for me, just like yours will be for you, since you will be doing better for yourself and their kid.

An MBA and can’t spell the correct form of the word “wasted”. You are in the perfect place, stay there and be happy.

loyalty is a good thing but you really shouldnt let it hold you back from your own happiness. That wouldn’t be freedom.
