ultrasound program at cc ..???

ok my school says you have to be a college graduate–minimum associates degree. with all my gen ed’s and some prereqs i was taking to get into some health program–was undecided until now( always knew i wanted to work in healthcare just not as a nurse) Should I just get the General Edu AA degree or should i get aa degree in x ray tech. its not a requirement as far as i know. but what would be better? after the aa degree the ultrasound school is 16month certificate. there are wait lists to be in the x ray and sonographer program. so should i just try and apply to xray –most of the pre req for xray and sonographer are the same and just see where i get into first. the only thing is i can apply to radiology probably in june after i take one more pre req but i cant apply to sonographer till after i get an AA degree. both have waiting lists like i said. anyone else in similar situation…what should i do? what would be best???

i wont have AA degree until January 2009

From your description, the ultrasound program at this college is not an accredited program. Accredited u/s programs are a full two years long. If this is a NON-accredited program, don’t waste your time or money on it. Upon graduation from a NON-accredited u/s program, you must work full time in the field of ultrasound for a full year before you can take your licensing exams. But, the problem is that you will have a hard time getting an ultrasonographer job without that license. Those programs put you between a rock and a hard place.

You can go to the following website, search “diagnostic medical sonographer” and your state to see if this program is accredited.

Your first step is radiology. As far as I know you have to have the radiology tech training BEFORE you can take the sonographer courses.
