How did I do?
True or False (3 statements)
Response: True True True
1)Communication is a verbal process. But it is also possible to communicate in ways other than with words, written or spoken. One’s behavior often belies the words one has spoken or written. Another, more subtle, often committed unknowingly, form of communication is body language. A simple gesture can confirm or deny the truth of one’s words.
2)Of course words have meaning. Sadly, the meaning of any single word may be something completely different to one person than it is to another. If those same 2 people are “communicating”, there will doubtless be something lost in the translation. Notice how often you say or hear, “Oh! I didn’t understand what you meant!” Meaning–indeed. Common meaning–rarely.
3)Communication can certainly break down. For both the reasons mentioned above, this often happens. But other causes can generate breakdown. Cultural differences is one big reason, and that would of course include language mistranslations. But communication with another person or group is a very emotional act, and those whose emotions are not in sync with one another might easily misunderstand something–might even deliberately choose to “misunderstand”.
CONCLUSION: Communication is a quite complex subject, and if we accept your first premise which identifies communication as a verbal act, then we must also accept it as an uniquely human trait. Other animals seem to have, within each species, a commonality, noted primarily because of the occasional “rogue” within any group. Humans, much more diverse–culturally, emotionally, politically, religiously–are so because of their communication.
