Well, it depends – do you want to write books or articles – or do you want to make steady money (and then someday write the novel you’ve got kicking around in your head)?

One of the best books out there about actually earning a living from writing is Peter Bowerman’s “The Well Fed Writer” – and it’s the one that really helped me launch my writing business. Very good info.

As far as which school and major, for commercial writing, it doesn’t really matter. Just make sure to take as many writing classes as you can no matter what else you study. The style you’ll have to use in college is really different from what you’d use as a copywriter, though. If you can, get some courses in advertising and communications – not so much in journalism.

About which type of job in the meantime, why not start freelancing now? I know high school students who are starting commercial freelance businesses, and doing pretty well with it. It’s ideal because it’s so flexible time-wise. You only take on as much work as you’ve got time to do.

Good luck!

Im actually writing for three major publications without attending college, I just began entering a few contests in high school and writign in my free-time. I saw website needing a writer for a column so I told them I have experience and I showed them some sample work. It all started there, i do admit a degree would probably help with the pay but im happy doing what i love and getting my name out there-Plus im only 21 so I have plenty of time to experience first and then spend lots of $$$ on college. Good Luck

majoring in english or english lit is always a good start…but you dont have to chose what you wanna do now b/c i dont know many people who stuck with what they wanted to do while they were still in high school. try looking at liberal arts colleges and writers are usually either journalists(which i dont suggest from stories from friends) or teachers. in the meanwhile writing for the school paper ior a local paper is good or start writing short stories and submit them to publishers. good luck with everything

Writer’s write. Start by paying close attention in your English class. Ask your teacher for some guidance. When you get to college, enroll in as many creative writing classes as possible.
