The terms college and university are often used interchangeably, however, but there are some differences. For one thing, the word “university” is used primarily for institutions which offer four-year bachelors degrees and graduate programs. Originally, universities were all research institutions, but in the past few decades, a lot of places have felt that there was a prestige factor involved in being called a university, and they have changed their names from “college” to “university”.
As to quality of lectures, at a large university many freshman courses are taught by doctoral students, some of whom are not cut out to be teachers. The renowned professors often are primarily involved in research and their teaching is at the graduate level – they definitely won’t be teaching freshmen. The teachers in colleges that are primarily undergraduate spend most of their time teaching.
Campus job prospects would definitely be better at an undergraduate college than at a university, where the better jobs will be offered to graduate students.
