Scholarships? What can I do to improve my chances? Any Idea?

What do colleges look for in order to offer you a scholarship? I want to be prepared.

Someone told me you should have like something under your belt in these categories:

Academic Excellence

The Arts

Community Service

Athletic / Sports

She said this shows you are well rounded.

I have straight A’s and am in the highest possible level for all classes

I love acting in plays

I already have an internship with the UNESCO center for peace and we do charity work non-stop.

I am on a swim – team.

Is this good enough? Any tips? Anything else I can do.

I am in the 8th grade and I want to get into politics when I grow up – prior to pursuing my political dreams I wish to work towards becoming an accomplised business-woman – preferrably self-employed.

Thanks in advance!

*no rude answers please! yes I do have a life, yes I do have friends, and yes we do hang out, and no i am not a nerd/dork. please don’t judge me! thank you!

You are missing one essential element to getting scholarships: good SAT scores. You are very young, and you have a lot of time to prepare. However many scholarships are awarded based on superb SAT scores. You will take the PSAT during your sophomore or/and junior year of high school. There is an award called the “National Merit Scholar” that is offered based on PSAT scores. They have a ton of test prep books at your local bookstore (B&N or Borders or whatever). Get yourself an SAT prep book and start studying when you have free time. I am an SAT prep instructor with The Princeton Review, so I am preferential to our materials. There are other companies who publish SAT prep books. Just take a look at the bookstore.

You know what really helps? And I’m not trying to be funny, you can probably ask your parents about this. But I have found that if your family is poor or lower middle class, or rich, you won’t have a problem getting into college and paying for it. If your a member of a minority, all the better. If your middle class you don’t qualify for squat unless your super smart, super athletic, or score really high on your ACT, SAT. I have gone through this with my kids while my neighbor has 7 kids, is a stay at home mom, her husband doesn’t make much money and the 2 oldest qualify for 13,000 + in grants because of their financial situation. They didn’t even score that high on the ACT 19, 18. So when you pursue your political career, that’s maybe something you can address.

The trick to getting schoarships is to APPLY FOR THEM. Many students just sit back and hope they will be granted one. There are many free sites out there that list the scholorships and requirements. (Never pay for this information) Ask your University’s financial aid office for a list too.

You want to continue what you are doing in High School. They want to see extracurricular activities including sports and volunteerism. The key is good grades in high school.
