My daughter is doing this.
There is no one answer — different universities judge things differently.
My opinion is that it proves the student is able to handle college work and demonstrates they are willing to take on challenges and do the hard work.
On the down side, there are socialization issues, but with a mind mature enough to accomplish this difficult feat, I think the socialization issues would be a minor consideration at most.
