Question about college!?

Okay… I am a high school student interested in becoming a veternarian. What do you have to do to become a vet? I have heard that you have to take pre-veternarian studies and then go to veternarian school. Is that true and if not can you clear things up for me?

i do not know the specifics, but that does sound true. In my case, I’m in nursing. I have to take classes for pre-nursing, then when I finish those pre-nursing classes, I apply for nursing. So after accepted into nursing school, I take upper division courses. I am sure veternarian school does the same thing. Find the college you are interested in (in Texas I hear that A&M college station has a good vet program) and look at their graduation degree plan.

There are two ways to get into vet school. One is to get a 4 yr. BS degree first, usually something like Biology or Chemistry is a good choice. The second is to go to a college that offers a 3 yr. pre-vet program, where you take mostly since and math courses and skip some of the general liberal arts courses like music, art, history, etc. The advantage of a pre-vet program is that you cut a year off your school time, but the disadvantage is that if you don’t get accepted into vet school, the pre-vet curriculum is not a degree and you aren’t on track for a degree and it will take you longer to graduate with a 4 yr degree. Also if you get into vet school and then fail or have to drop out for some reason, you don’t have any kind of degree if you went the pre-vet route. So, if you’re sure you’re going to have the grades to get into vet school, and you’re sure you’re going to finish, then go for the pre-vet program. If you’re not so sure, get a BS degree first so worse case, you have a college degree of some sort.
