question about college?

i am 16 and a sophomore in high school but i got offered to go to Northwest Missouri state in maryville next year. its called the Missouri academy. where you go to college instead of high school and you get a hs diploma and a associates degree of science.

i am wondering if i should do this. I want to be a psychologist/psychiatrist. would a associates degree in science be helpfull? does science have anything to do with phychology? or does it not matter if i get the degree or not.

by the way i would be 18 when i got it so i guess its like skipping 2 years of college kinds.

what do you think?

well once you get that AA you can transfer into a major University [yes, your credits will transfer, if it is a legit college]…

b/c in many cases you can’t really get a proper job with just an AA you need to get more education and get a B.A. or in your case you will need a Phd…if you want to be a psychologist/psychiatrist…

okay i read into it and you earn both your HS degree and AA in science…

sounds like a good idea…but I would advise you to know more about what you want to study…b/c like the other people have said you need a md for psychiatry and a phd. for psychology…so you will need to transfer your credits to a major university…which means you’d be 18 and in your junior year of university…

DONT DO IT. honestly, i am somewhat of an academic advisor at my college and have been one at my high school as well. This is not what you want to do if you desire to have anything resembling a teenage life. Enjoy your teen years in a high school with other high school friends. If you are good enough to get into the accelerated program, then you wont have a problem getting into the college of your choice in hopes of obtaining a Bachelor’s degree and not a crappy Associates. In the grand scheme of things, when you’re getting your PhD (for psychology) or your MD (for psychiatry cuz they are different), professional schools wont care if you have an associates. they only care about your bachelors which you would have to get after your Associates anyway. in addition, professional schools might not know how to measure your success in comparison to other applicants unless you do really well while getting both associate and bachelor degrees. This is not certain, but is still a possibility. You want to keep the pattern consistent for professional school so that you shine in places others have failed. Doing this program might prevent the ease at which the professional school folks can assess this and let you in, especially because it is not a popular program and does not have much proven success. It wont make you graduate from these degrees any sooner. Finally, you would have to formally apply to a new school to get the bachelor’s anyway. It might hurt you more than help you. You should really think about the senior prom and professional school before making this decision.

Both psychiatrists (MD) and psychologists (PhD) need a background in science, so an associates degree in science would be an appropriate first step, given your goals. Be aware, as others have already pointed out, that for either occupation, you will ultimately need a Bachelor’s degree and must go to medical school and get an MD (for psychiatry) or go to graduate school and get a PhD (for psychology).

Can the college units you would get from this experience transfer to wherever you want to go for your Bachelor’s degree? If not, you may want to reconsider your options, because it might be a waste of time. However, if the units transfer, it sounds like a great opportunity to get a head start in your college work.

You need a doctorate degree to be a psychologist or a psychiatrist. An Associate’s Degree in Science is not going to help you much. You should contact the Admissions Office at NWMS and ask to speak to an advisor. Tell the advisor what you want to do, and see what they suggest. They’ll be able to give you a much better idea of what you’re doing.

in all honesty, you would be doing something just as good for yourself by staying at your high school, getting your diploma, and applying during your last semester in your junior year or first semester in your senior year to a good psychology or biology bachelor’s degree program at the college of your choice. if you have the option of taking concurrent enrollment college courses or advanced placement courses, you could do that as well, but you will likely find that many college programs don’t take a lot of credits from associate degrees, and many courses you complete early-on through an associate’s degree or concurrent enrollment or advanced placement won’t really help that much, and you will likely end up repeating some of your coursework. i did a lot of college coursework when i was in high school, and also took a couple advanced placement (ap) exams, as well as maintaining a 4.0 gpa, and found that coming into a bachelor’s degree program with credits previously earned complicated my degree-planning process and didn’t save me that much time. if i had to do it over again, i would probably just do normal high school courses and then go to college!!!

An associate’s degree is less than a bachelor’s degree. And if you want to be a psychologist you’ll need a bachelor’s and a master’s degree and possibly PhD (depending on what you want to do in psychology). If you want to be a psychiatrist, you’ll have to go to medical school.

You will not be able to go into psychology or psychiatry with an associate’s degree in anything.

Also, psychology and psychiatry is more medicine than science.

Go to high school, then a regular 4-year college. It takes longer and costs more because it is a better degree, and you will be better off.

psychology is considered a science so this would be a good opportunity for you if you can deal with missing out on the last two years of the high school experience without regret go ahead and do it

best of luck
