Pre-Med……?

Would it be a good idea to receive a bachelor of arts in physiology? Is that major going to be acceptable to medical school admission committees??

First, just to straighten out a little confusion… the degree Bachelor of Science doesn’t indicate that the ***subject*** studied was scientific, and similarly, a Bachelor of Arts doesn’t necessarily have to have anything at all to do with art. The BS was “invented” to identify a more prescriptive degree program, with fewer choices to be made by the student. The idea, once upon a time, was that certain fields required a bunch of prescribed courses so that the students in those fields didn’t “have time” to get those prescribed coruses if they were learning about silly things like English, Philosophy, etc. That’s why you can find BS degrees in all sorts of subjects and BA degrees in the sciences. Oh… and just so you know, I earned a BA in biology many years ago and it’s been immensely helpful in my career.

On to the real issue… Yes, you can get that BA in Physiology and still go off to medical school. You’ll need to be certain that you’re getting the necessary pre-requisite course work for med school (2 semesters of bio – no problem; 2 semesters of intro chem; 2 semesters of organic chem; and 2 semesters of physics). So as long as your degree either includes those courses *or* leaves you the flexibility to get them in as electives, you’re just fine.

Last point… The truth of the matter is that BA’s usually offer students more opportunities to develop their critical thinking skills, something terribly important to success as a physician (or scientist). So keep this in mind as you go through your other courses, and it may work to your advantage. Good luck!

You could major in Physiology, but why would you put yourself through that? 🙂

You can major in anything you want, as long as you get the admissions requirements done for the Med School you want to attend.

My advice is to major in something that you enjoy…and minor in Pre Med. That way you can be sure to get the science requirements done for Med School. Most people choose to major in Biology or Chemistry because the Med School prerequisites closely resemble the major program description for those majors.

Colleges like to throw curves at you…Physical Education is usually taught through a college of Science, but you have a choice between a BA or BS…BS just has more of a science component to it.

Are you sure that it is a BA? Physiology is usually considered a science. I got my undergrad degree in psychology and could choose either a BA or BS. I chose the BS but think your major speaks for itself and will certainly be acceptable to med schools whether labeled a BA or a BS. Good luck..

sure! you can major in anything… just because everyone majors in biology doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good thing… med schools are looking for a variety of majors…
