please help!? anyone who knows about Occupational Therapy (OT) please help me …?

im thinking about doing Occupational Therapy as a career but I’m concerned about the amount of science involved. im not very good at science (i enjoy biology and get good marks, HOPELESS at physics and chem) but great at english. i wanted to know about the amount of science needed in an OT course and their career after uni?

also, what do you think of this career, if you are an OT or know somebody who is one, do they enjoy it?

Sciences: Physics, Biology, Physiology, Anatomy (I have to take Gross Anatomy, but I’m not sure about other programs).

Don’t sell yourself short just b/c you don’t think your good at Science. You can do anything you set your mind to, it’s only YOU who holds yourself back.

If you are seriously interested in getting into OT, you should go job shadow with a therapist. You will probably have to have so many hours of observations to even get accepted into the program anyway, and it’s better to know exactly what you are getting yourself into now rather than later. That’s why they require that you do it, b/c there is a lot more to OT than just helping people get dressed, drive cars, and operate wheel chairs. Take the initiative to get involved now, it will look good that you have experience already. Get involved in volunteer work too, especially people with special needs. I volunteer at a therapeutic riding center (hippotherapy), and also at a non-profit art school for people with special needs. There are all kinds of things you can do. Special Olympics is a good one too.

You must like people if you want to become an OT. The school is tough, but the pay off is big. You can work in many different settings, so if you’re unhappy at the rehab clinic or hospital, you can go work at a school with children or do home assessments insead.

I hope this helps you.

There is alot of science, mostly anatomy. I am currently an OT student and in our program we have to take anatomy with a cadaver lab, neuroscience, and pathophysiology. Those are the really big and hard science courses. We don’t have to take chem or physics, but I think that it depends on the program you’re in and your school. My school offers a 3 year masters program, I’m barely in the 1st semester and we are taking anatomy and the cadaver lab, research, and intro to OT which is 12 credits.

I agree with the person above me that you should volunteer somewhere because it will help you see what types of different settings OTs can work at. I did some volunteer work in a rehab clinic and it made me really interested in hand therapy.

Good Luck!

I can’t help much on what is needed to complete the course. I can tell you that if you enjoy helping people this could be a great career for you. Enjoying your chosen career is what you need to figure out. We are all “wired” different. Check your motives for being an OT. I’ve been around for 51 yrs. tried many occupations. I enjoy being in agriculture. that’s the way I’m wired. If you want something bad enough, a mountain will not stop you. It will only keep things interest as you climb toward your goal.. good luck

Hi there,

My friend Dave is an occupational therapist. The course he took to become one, was a 2-year course. For the nost part of his cirriculum, focus was on the human anatomy. Now remember, by becoming an O.C. you’re not going to be working on every single part of the skeleton, likewise, you’ll also be required to acquaint yourself with different types of energies, isometrics, applied force, kenesis, etc. If you apply yourself to the course and watch for classmates that are doing the same, gravitate towards them, you’ll do awesome.

All the best, amigo.

Occupational clinical care is working to human beings to get them back to the factor of being waiting to function returned by utilising appearing some reality they’re now no longer waiting to accomplish by using wreck or ailment. that is to no longer be at a loss for words with actual clinical care have been the best concentration is on getting the stream back into their injured joints. the two paintings mutually in direction of a elementary purpose.

You will need biology and anatomy. You can always get a tutor if you need extra help. If its something you really want to do, don’t let fear hold you back.
