Pharmacy???

I was wondering what exactly do you do when you are a pharmacist. Is it hard, not school wise…job wise? Also if I go to a pharmacy school right after high school without taking pre-pharmacy am I going to have to make up those 2 years that I would have taken if I went into pre-pharmacy. Because I was looking at some colleges and some had majors as pre-pharmacy and others just said pharmacy. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense.

Hi. I worked in pharmacy as a pharmacist for about 20 years. There’s SO much to tell you that I’d be typing till my fingers came off! So I’ll break it down into a small version and allow you to email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

First, pharmacists make excellent money. It depends upon what area of the country you live, but on average, it’s not uncommon to earn about $90 – 100,000 a year. Most pharmacy schools nowadays graduate students with a doctorate degree in pharmacy, called a PharmD. It’s probably your fastest way of getting a “doctorate.” Most programs involve about 6 (sometimes 7) years of college. Some pharmacy schhols allow students in after high school. One around here (Phila) that does, is USP University of Sciences of Philadelphia). Theire main competetion is Temple University which offers a pre-pharm program that has LOTS of math (calculus, physics, and chemisty, including the horrid Organic Chemistry that has fried many minds!!!

As for the JOB…MUCH depends upon where you work..hospital, retail, for a drug company, as an instructor, etc.

Persoanlly, MANY pharmacists I know do NOT like their job. Many days are very long without much, if any break(s). I’m talking 12 hours days and about 45+ hours a week on average.

What I STRONGLY suggest before you apply to pharmacy school (and it is VERY difficult to get in to most nowadays unless you have a 3.5 GPA or higher), is to work in a pharmacy. While some pharmacies now require that pharm techs get certified, that may not be as easy as applying for a job. You can take (or look into taking) the certification exam for a CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) at www.PTCB.com.

The demand for pharmacists is HIGH and, as I said, the pay is excellent. But you have to (or SHOULD) ENJOY what you do!! MANY pharmacists get burned out from the relentless work. I lleft pharacy to TEACH pharmacy and LOVE IT!! The pay is about half of what a pharmacist makes, but I’m VERY HAPPY doing what I do.

PLEASE, speak with pharmacists and ask them their opinions. And, as I said, feel free to email me!

Regardless, best of luck.

One piece of advice: Do what MAKES YOU HAPPY. There’s nothing better than getting up to go to a job you ENJOY!!

I assume you are talking about the thing with the probes to go up your nose and transmit red light? I’m not actually sure at the moment as i have just bought one today, but i have been reading reviews for a while to decide whether to buy it and they seem to be 90% extremely positive, hence the reason i bought it! I will let you know in a couple of weeks if it is a miracle cure 😛

Pharmacy school is 4 years. Before going to pharmacy school, you have to complete undergraduate prerequisites (2-3 years worth). You cannot go to pharmacy school until you complete all the classes and take your PCATs.

You can do your prepharm courses at any school. There are only about a 100 schools which offer pharmacy.

There are about 10 schools which accept students directly from high school. All the others, you’ll have to do a minimum of 2 years of prepharm to complete your prereqs.

There are plenty of jobs.
