personal statement – controversial work history?
I’m writing a personal statement for a graduate program and don’t know whether to include an internship at an organization that could be viewed as controversial, offensive, or extremist. I interned there for almost a full year and would really like to include the internship but I don’t want to hurt my chances of getting accepted. The internship is relevant to the program to which I’m applying. Any advice?

If the internship is relevant, suggest that you include it in the personal statement. Think whether the organisation is offensive in what ways to the university, and write your statement such that you have discovered this during your internship, but that you do not believe in what they espouse.
You should always write in such a way that you have gained valuable experience in the internship, but that you are not an extremist as a result of the intership. The key is to be positive in your personal statement, and show that you are objective and understand what the organisation stands for and what you believe in. Always align your statement with what you believe, and highlight what the organisation conflicts with your values.
