You’ll still have to drive no less than an hour from any of these colleges to get good snow. If you wanted really good snow with easy access you should go up to Oregon.

And out of those schools, it will really depends on what you’re looking to study. But I’ll base this mostly on party status, since that’s what you’ve mentioned. I’ll let you know that I’m not as familiar with some of the schools as others, but I’ll tell you what I can.

CSU Chico: Definitely has a rep as being a party school, but you can get some good studying done there. As far as reputation on an academic level, it’s on an average level out of the csu schools.

SF State: As far as a party school, it’s not so much keggers at one frat and the next night at the other, because there’s no real dorms and typical campus. However, you’re in San Francisco, so you’ll definitely have access to parties and pretty much anything else. Reputation wise, San Francisco State is pretty well known throughout the country, and are excellent in the arts (both visual, performing) and also in Psych, Social Sciences, and Kinesiology. Film is also super strong, Coppolas ring a bell, anyone? Great in nursing and teacher education. Pretty much everyone wanting to teach in the Bay Area goes here to get their teacher credentials.

Humboldt: Not a bad school. Sadly, identified first as the “stoner school” before anything else academically. But if getting stoned is your deal, by all means apply.

Sacramento State: Pretty good academically, heard they also are pretty strong in nursing. Not too sure about their party status, but a lot of people in Sacramento like to party, so you’d probably be able to find something outside the school.

CSU Monterey: I can honestly say I know nothing about them. Sorry =/

Really cold in the winter??? What do you call really cold? I lived near San Francisco for a few years and saw no cold weather except when I went skiing at Tahoe!! That was only moderately cold at best. If you want really cold, try going out of state to Montana State U in Bozeman, MT. Plenty of cold and fantastic snow for skiing or snowboarding!! Not many beach parties though!

To answer your question, Sac State would probably be closer to snowboarding in the Sierras.
