My son told us that the first year spent at a university you are required to stay on campus (in a dorm).?

He is completely insistant. I don’t believe this is true. Does anybody know?

Thanks!

that really depends on the university. Some schools do require freshmen to stay in dorms on campus, while others strongly encourge it. Some of my friends had to stay in dorms their first year because their schools wanted them too, while others stayed because they wanted to get more familar with the school (and get used to where everything is) make more friends, etc..

You can always call the school and ask.

Your son is wrong–you do not need to live on campus as a freshman at many if not most schools–especially state schools that cater to a local community. At some schools, such as Yale, most students live on campus for all four years. At others, freshman are required to live in on-campus housing–but there’s often an exception made if the person is living with family.

But I also wouldn’t discount the experience of living in a dorm. It’s a unique opportunity to live away from home in a somewhat controlled environment, and a way to bond with peers and live independently. And if you can afford it and your son really wants it, it’s something to consider–especially if Sonoma State is not his first choice. (Then again, the money saved on a dorm can be put towards helping him with an apartment in his later college years.)

Some colleges do require you to live on campus. When I was applying for colleges a teacher that had helped me said that you have to in order to go to the college although I’m not exactly sure why. But some of my friends that are going off to college say that they have to live on campus. If you talk to a university board member I’m sure they can explain as to why this is.

Living in the dorms varies from college to college. Freshmen generally get priority to live on campus and the priority usually decreases as one gets older. So it all depends on the school and their policies on living on campus. It is generally a good idea to have your son live on campus because that is one of the primary places where he will be able to make friends.

I actually had a similar experience. I went to a state school and they required us to live in the dorm our freshman year unless our parents/guardians lived in the city. If you are worried about your son lying to you, check out the website of his school (it’s most likely the school’s name .edu). All universities these days have extensive websites, so I bet it’s all on there.

And it can’t hurt to check out the institution and the surrounding neighborhood, what classes your son might take, the professors, etc. 🙂

I hope this helps!

it really depends on the college. I know that some colleges REQUIRE the freshman to stay in dorms on the campus. the college i am applying for makes us do that

It varies by college, but this is not common. It is sometimes true at some highly selective liberal arts colleges, although they may have exceptions for students whose families live nearby and the students are needed at home. This is not true for any large university. Look in the “admissions” area on the web site for any college he is considering and it will tell you.

This is totally dependent on the College or University in question. You should contact the school directly to ask about their policies or visit their websites online (try searching google.com: “school name”).
