My first day of college is Thu. Sept 6th..any advice?

Hi all!So my first day of college is this thursday and I just wanted to ask for advice/pointers, what should I bring with me(pen, folder?etc),what to expect etc. I graduated high school in 2006 but took the past year “off” so am back on the wagon :o)

Also, is college anything like high school? I want to be more outgoing and make friends because although I did have friends in HS, most were more like acquaintances than anything sooo..any advice on that too would be great! Thanks in advance. :o)

Congratulations on continuing your education. Bring paper and writing tool and your books. The bookstore can tell you what books to get by looking at your schedule.

College is really nothing like high school, your are paying for the privilege of being there so if you mess up, you will suffer the consequences. There is little competition in college so all that HS stuff is gone. Most people are very mature there. You will meet many different people and you can be anyone you want to be. Join some of the organizations on campus that you find interesting and speak to as many people in class as you can. You will certainly find someone you have things in common with. Since everyone is at college voluntarily, people are more serious about what they are doing (unless pressured by parents). For instance, there is rarely a dress code, but people for the most part will dress appropriately. This would not be the case in high school! There is no punishment in college for things such as talking in class, but this does not happen often. I think you will like it–You get what you put into it.

Attend every class, bring paper and pencil with you, keep a calendar of important dates, take notes, sit near the front, ask the instructor if in doubt about anything, discuss the work with classmates, do any homework (even if not graded), study for tests, listen, and always always do any extra credit if it is offered!

Hi

It sounds like you will be living on a campus that is a ways from home. Assuming that is true, consider these things:

Yes, bring the practical things like notebooks, paper and a toothbrush, but don’t fret that too much. If you forget anything, you’ll be able to buy it in the campus store.

Making friends is actually a very important task. And, just as your mother told you, be careful of the friends you make. Good friends will help you study and pull you through the tough times of school work and dealing with loneliness, etc. Bad friends will entice you to spend your time (and money) partying all of the time and you’ll risk failing in your studies.

No, college is not much like High School. In college, you are a lot more independent and responsible for your own time, schedule and performance. No body’s going to be there to tell you what to do… or what not to do. Also, you’ll find that most colleges have a lot more opportunities for after school activities than you may have had in HS

Work hard and good luck!

Visit the college bookstore as soon as possible to see what textbooks are needed for your classes (but don’t necessarily be in a hurry to buy unless you’re enrolled in a class that’s known to be full up). First day of class, take a pen (and a spare) and notebook or legal pad (whatever you’re comfortable with), and a binder or folder to store papers. A highlighter can be useful too.

Your living situation will play a large part in shaping your social life – you didn’t say if you would be in a dorm, frat/sorority, apartment, or living with parents. Look for clubs and activities in your planned major or your areas of interest, getting involved is a good way to get to know people. When possible, choose classes that will be smaller rather than large lecture sections – this should also provide more chances to get acquainted with other students. Remember this is a whole new school and whole new group of people, look at it as a fresh start and an opportunity to reinvent yourself. Also be a friend to make a friend. Good luck.

Well it sort of depends are you going to a community college or a university??? College is normally allot different than high school. Sometimes Community Colleges can feel a bit like high school but it depends on where you go.. Make sure you don’t get your books the day before or the first day of school because you Willl be in line FOREVER!!! Take a folder and paper because the Professors will pass out their Syllabi’s usually their first day. There are usually plenty of clubs to join there wil usually be tables in the student center or cafeteria to sign up for activities. You have to be more disciplined because the teachers don’t hover over you to get assignments done like in high school…Good luck

I would bring a binder with a folder for each class that you have, a three hole punch and lots of pens, pencils and paper. That first day you will learn everything that you will need, or at least be able to figure it out.. You are going to be getting a lot of very important papers most of which you will only get once. Syllabus that will be your favorite word. This is your time line to each class, will show you when papers, exams and such are. DO NOT LOSE THEM. Most professors give them out once and only once.

If you have textbooks bring them, you will probably have assignments right off the bat so you will need your texts.

Just be yourself, be outgoing, join study groups to meet more people and help with your grades.

Good for you for going back to school after taking a year off. I think that many to most people who “take a year off” never go back to school.

The first day will most likely be covering administrative stuff of class. Expectations of what is expected of you, etc. You will get a lot of paperwork: syllbus and such. Besure to bring (as a minium) a notebook, pen (and pencil if the type of classes might suggest it), folder for the paper.

College is nothing like HS. It may or may not be easier for you to make friends. Consider starting study groups in your class. There will also be all sorts of groups and clubs that you can join. Check some of them out and you are bound to make some friends.

High school is different from college. College is a great experience everyone is there to help. You will make friends really fast. Be yourself , try to join different clubs on campus, if they have a cheer leading team, become a cheerleader. Get to know as many people that work in the offices, and also your professors. always speak to your professors. They will be the ones to write your recommendations for the University. Again be yourself and always smile. if you have anymore ?’s feel free to email me

Good luck in College; the best advice is, step back, observe, smile, introduce yourself, listen, listen, listen, and observe everyone and everything around you. No one ever learned anything by talking. The words coming from someone else’s mouth are the best way to get to know something, and someone.

It is nothing like high school; you are on your own here and what you study, and who you study with, and how you study, determines what you will get from college. Remember, this is your future you are preparing for, not a sophmore sock hop

good luck and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

first day of college is intimidating. you don’t know anyone and no one knows you. You should try to be as open-minded and open as possible. Its kinda of hard to make friends with soo much stuff going around.. the easiest way is to just join clubs and be kind.

college is nothing like high school. You are in a parent free zone. So just enjoy the fact that you are actually by yourself.

It’s really easy…don’t stress out and don’t worry about stupid little things like folders and what-not. Do what I did….take your brain with you and you should be fine for the first few days.
