Medical school advice?

Where should i go to school for dermatology? Also my GPA is not that great (less than a 3.3). Is medical school out of the question? Any advice on which schools I should apply to where I can do a residency in dermatology? Would any school have this residency available–or does it have to be specifically a “school of dermatology?”

You can go to any medical school. Dermatology is a specialty that you will apply to do a residency in after medical school. Dermatology is an extremely competitive specialty to get into, however, so be forewarned — not everyone who wants to do derm will get into a derm residency. It would be to your advantage to go to a med school that has an affiliated derm residency, but it isn’t necessary.

Your GPA doesn’t mean that it’s impossible for you to get into medical school, however, it would be an uphill battle. You might have to do a post-bac or a master’s program (and get stellar grades) in order to prove yourself. A lot would depend on why your GPA is so low and how you do on the MCAT. If you really, really want it and are willing to work for it, you can do it.

Sorry to say that a GPA of 3.3 will not make you competetive for a US or Canadian medical school. A GPA of 3.7 is borderline.

The first two years of med school is learning the basic sciences. The second two years are spent doing clinical rotations, meaning you spend anywhere between 6 to 12 weeks rotating through the major specialties in medicine to become exposed to and learn about those type of patients/conditions. Following the completion of the four years, assuming you have done well, you are awarded your MD. After completing medical school you apply for a residency program in the specialty that interests you.

I suggest you visit the Association of American Medical Colleges web site to get answers to the questions that most potential med students have. The web site is: www.aamc.org

Just so you know, Dermatology is one of the more competetive residencies, so you have to be good to get it.
