Do you believe participating in high school football or basketball effects your success in life?

My boyfriend believes the guys who are jocks in high school and participate in football are more disciplined. He says the guys who participate in football this fall are more likely to succeed in life because of the discipline they have in high school sports.

I think he has a screw loose and participation in high school sports is not discipline enough to make you do well in your carreer choice or in your life.

Do you think he is nuts, or am I ? I just think he is being ridiculous. My family are not at all sports minded, but my brother retired at the age of 35 and was very successful, and we have an attorney, an electrician and 2 nurses in our family and none of us were in sports.

Where does he get his crazy idea’s?

Not necessarily. I did basketball, track, and water polo. I quit basketball in order to spend more time studying for the SATs. Basketball wouldn’t have helped me one way or another had I kept with it.

Some jocks have the brains to use that discipline they learned in order to be successful in life. For others, they were just sheep and it wasn’t really “discipline”. For those in the first group, they likely would have had success whether they were in sports or not. For those in the second group, the discipline and hard work they did possibly helped them pull themselves together and developed a work ethic. Work ethic is always useful.

He gets his crazy ideas because that’s what coaches and other jocks tell one another. It’s got some real life examples in the pros/college, but I wouldn’t say it is accurate as a whole. For top athletes maybe, but there are tons of teams full of crappy/average jocks where their “discipline” isn’t anything special.
