It’s not true at all. There are colleges out-of-state that will accept just about anyone. What you will “need” to have will depend on many things, including:

the difficulty of the classes you’ve taken and the overal reputation of your school. (If it’s a school that hands out A’s on a regular basis, and you’re gettind D’s, that looks bad.)

your SAT/ACT scores

the competitiveness of the school you want to attend

Your parents may be trying to “scare” you, or they may be misinformed. They may also be concerned about money. IF money is an issue, they have a legitimate concern. With a 3.7 or similar GPA, you might merit some scholarship dough. If not, they might have to foot the whole bill–or you might have to take out serious loans.

Good luck.

Consider in-state. Even if you hate Louisiana, there’s something to be said about an affordable public education. . . and if you just want to “get out,” well, Louisiana is a large state with many public universities. There may well be one that fits you.

Well, it depends on the out-of-state university to which you are applying. But in general, you will have to have much better credentials than the in-state people in order to get into an out of state public school. The exception might be if you are the only person from your state applying to a university (and you will never know that until the application process is over). Colleges love to brag about geographic diversity, so it might be a little easier to get in if this is your situation.

You don’t have to have a 3.7 GPA to go to an out-of-state college. The acceptable GPA is set by the school, so check out the colleges you are considering and see what their individual average GPA of admittance is.

Schools like Harvard, Yale, Princeton etc. have higher requirements than most Universities. Some of course are higher than others so you will want to check with the individual institution to get their admission requirements. Try:

Of course not! It depends upon the college/university you apply to. I would suggest, unless you are an outstanding athlete, most won’t look at under 3.0.

Colleges and universities also take into consideration extra curricular activities, leadership, outside activities, you application letter, test scores, teacher/community member recommendations, etc.

BTW: Who is “They” ???

Each college has it’s own requirements. Check with the college for entrance requirements. Remember, tuition is it’s about twice as much to attend out-of-state.

Well it depends if you are a presidental scholar or not. If you are, then yes, you will need a 3.7 to keep your scholarship.
